Qi Zhang's research centres on designing efficient and sustainable data communication and computing technologies. She researches Edge Intelligence, Internet of Things, data compression and analytics at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and is co-leading the research group NeXt (Network Computing, Communications and Storage).

This inaugural lecture will introduce Goal-oriented Semantic Communication, a novel paradigm aimed at addressing critical challenges in modern communication systems and data computing infrastructures. Prof. Zhang will highlight the transformative potential of this paradigm shift through promising research outcomes in areas such as time-series IoT data compression and analytics, the edge–cloud computing continuum, and the Tactile Internet.
